EXTRANEOUS MATTER ANALYSIS

What is Extraneous Matter?

Extraneous Matter
"Any foreign matter in product associated with objectionable conditions or practices in production, storage, or distribution; included are filth, decomposed material (decayed tissues due to parasitic or nonparasitic causes), and miscellaneous matter such as sand and soil, glass, rust, or other foreign substances. Excluded are bacterial counts."

Filth
"Any objectionable matter contributed by animal contamination or product such as rodent, insect, or bird matter; or any other objectionable matter contributed by insanitary conditions."

Definitions provided by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC)

Extraneous Matter Testing and Filth Analysis are specialized areas that require the proper training and experience. Central Hudson Lab specializes in the analysis of food products for the detection of extraneous matter and filth.

Our involvement is multi-fold. We offer:

  • Extraneous Matter Profile Analysis
    includes:
    • filth (insect, rodent, and bird contamination)
    • heavy filth (as sand)
    • ferrous non-ferrous metal fragments
  • Sanitation Inspections
  • Workshops to train your analyst in micro-entomology.

The extraneous matter found in a product gives the sanitation history of the product including the ingredients. Stored product pests can be identified. Contamination by insects and rodents can be determined to be pre-processing or post-processing. The liability in many cases can be determined.
