As of this writing the FDA has imported Mushrooms on "Automatic Detention". Every shipment is tested for Filth and must pass the FDA Regulations as posted in the DAL (Defect Action Levels).
The DAL for Mushrooms:
"Average of over 20 or more maggots of any size per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid or 15 grams of dried mushrooms OR Average of 5 or more maggots 2mm or longer per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid or 15 grams of dried mushrooms."
"Average of 75 mites per 100 grams drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid or 15 grams of dried mushrooms."
The above specifications were written 40 years ago. Are they still appropriate? Has the FDA found imports with high numbers of maggots and mites?
Central Hudson Lab tested six samples representing production from the U.S.A., China and Indonesia. Jar, can and fresh mushrooms were analyzed.
