Extraneous Matter results for Pasta and Noodles were posted last year. Two of the brands tested were imported product. They were Rigatoni and Spaghetti - 5. They were also the worst of the group. They were significantly higher in filth than their domestic counterparts. Eight Macaroni/Noodle products of imported brands were purchased as a follow up. Three countries are represented in the sampling. We included two egg noodle products and two organic products.

Results on 225-gram (about 1/2 pound) sample using AOAC extraction procedures:

Angel Hair (organic) 18 insect fragments (Lesser Grain Borer)
1 mite
1 head capsule of Lessor Grain Borer larva

Perciatelli 85 insect fragments (weevil, Lessor Grain Borer, flat grain beetle)

Linguine 8 insect fragments (weevil, Lessor Grain Borer)

Penne Rigatoni (organic)

157 insect fragments (weevil, Lessor Grain Borer, moth, tribolium)
3 weevel larva
1 head capsul of Lessor Grain Borer larva
1 rodent hair (1 mm)

Rigatoni*,** 326 insect fragments (weevil, Lessor Grain Borer, moth, flat grain beetle)
2 head capsuls of Lessor Grain Borer larva

Rotelle 18 insect fragments (Lessor Grain Borer)
1 head capsul of Lessor Grain Borer larva

Egg Noodles 8 insect fragments

Egg Noodles** 5 insect fragments

* sample violates FDA regulations
** sample had no code on packaging material

A recall of the Rigatoni is impossible since a production code was not present.

Opinion:
Five of the brands (57%) are at the same quality level as domestic product.
