EXTRANEOUS MATTER ANALYSIS

Market Survey: TOMATO PRODUCTS - IMPORTED
More Rotten Tomatoes

In June of 2001, Domestic Tomato Products were surveyed for Howard Mold Counts. These included tomato juice, blended juice, ketchup, Chili, Taco Sauce, Steak sauce, and BBQ sauce.

In March of 2003, Salsa Brands were surveyed. Evidence of Rotten Tomatoes in one brand was noted.

Since that report, Central Hudson Lab received inquiries about the Quality or lack of it in Imported Tomato Products. 6 brands covering 7 different products and 4 countries of importation were purchased at retail level for this survey. Over 50 % are unacceptable to US standards.

The question for the FDA is "Are all imported tomato products being tested for Howard Mold Counts?" and if so what are the results; how many lots are rejected? And if not what percentage is being tested?

Do Companies submitted a certificate of analysis for Howard Mold Counts? Is "special" consideration being given to certain trading countries?

Getting an answer from the FDA would be a challenge to say the least. But CHL has answers in our Market Newsletter.

The results of the market survey, including brand names, are available in our Market Newsletter.
